Passing Away: Roy E Disney

Disney lost a major backer and player today as Roy E Disney, nephew to Walt and son to Roy O Disney passed away today at 79 from stomach cancer.

The LA Times has done a great obit, so I won't go into it much here. Still it's thanks to Roy that Disney and animation finally came roaring back in the early nineties with The Little Mermaid, Aladdin  and The Lion King. He fought hard to make the studio relevant again and not so much a cartoon business but one of quality.

Roy started out not wanting to have much to do with the family business but eventually came aboard. He made wise investments and became successful on his own before coming back. Then he watched while incompentant CEO's and others basically ran the company and the animaiton studio especially into the ground. He helped force them out and eventually put Michael Eisner, Jeffery Kaztenburg and Frank Wells in charge. Kaztenburg eventually left and Wells passed away leaving Eisner in charge and it didn't take long before he too was running the company badly. Once again Roy forced another CEO out and Disney got back on track, Buying Pixar, and returning to 2D animation he got to see the latest Disney movie The Princess and the Frog see the silver screen.
